Director of Web Development

Permanent Employee, Full-time, Remote, PST Shift

Job Summary:

Lead the end-to-end technical direction, architecture, and hands-on development of our web ecosystem across Shopify, custom apps, integrations, and internal tools. You will be the team’s senior technical authority and mentor—owning standards, performance, security, and delivery while partnering with eCommerce, Marketing, Creative, Operations, and IT to turn business goals into elegant, scalable solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead developer and architect: design systems, write production code, conduct reviews, and set engineering standards across Shopify and custom services.

  • Own the web architecture and technical roadmap to ensure scalability, maintainability, and speed; champion best practices for performance, accessibility, and reliability.

  • Manage, coach, and level-up a team of developers; run sprint planning, technical scoping, code reviews, and post-mortems.

  • Oversee CI/CD, version control, environment strategy, observability/monitoring, incident response, and release management.

  • Drive integrations across APIs, apps, and data services; ensure robust patterns for data flows, security, and error handling.

  • Partner cross-functionally to scope requirements, translate them into technical plans, and deliver high-quality releases on time.

  • Maintain site performance and security posture; ensure compliance with PCI and privacy regulations (GDPR/CCPA).

  • Create and maintain technical documentation covering architecture, systems, and operating procedures; continuously evaluate and introduce modern frameworks and tooling.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of professional web development with mastery of modern front-end and back-end stacks (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, React/Vue, Node, databases).

  • 2–3+ years in a lead/manager role mentoring developers and directing architecture and delivery.

  • Deep Shopify expertise: Liquid, Hydrogen/Storefront API, checkout extensibility, metafields/metaobjects, and custom app development.

  • Proven track record of shipping at scale while balancing hands-on coding with architecture leadership and roadmap ownership.

  • Expert knowledge of responsive/UI performance, cross-browser compatibility, accessibility (WCAG), and core web vitals optimization.

  • Strong API/integration experience and sound database/schema design skills.

  • Ownership of Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, environment management, and monitoring/alerting practices.

  • Security-first mindset with experience implementing PCI and privacy compliance (GDPR/CCPA) and hardening web apps.

  • Exceptional debugging, systems thinking, and communication skills; able to influence across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Nice to have: passion for food/cooking and experience in consumer/eCommerce environments.
