Settlement & Lien Negotiation Specialist

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Settlement & Lien Negotiation Specialist to support the negotiation and resolution of medical liens and personal injury settlements for California cases. This role is responsible for identifying, analyzing, negotiating, and resolving liens while maximizing client recovery and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and settlement requirements.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in California personal injury lien resolution, settlement disbursements, and medical billing analysis. This individual will work closely with attorneys, case managers, medical providers, insurance carriers, and lienholders to facilitate efficient case resolution and optimize settlement outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Settlement & Lien Negotiation

    • Manage medical lien and settlement negotiation processes for California personal injury cases

    • Identify, review, verify, and resolve all applicable liens, including provider liens, health insurance liens, ERISA liens, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and other government liens

    • Negotiate reductions with medical providers, hospitals, insurance carriers, and lienholders to maximize client recovery

    • Request, review, and analyze balances, itemized statements, payoff amounts, medical bills, and treatment records

    • Develop negotiation strategies based on case facts, treatment history, and settlement values

    • Ensure all liens are properly resolved prior to settlement disbursement

  • Settlement Review & Case Coordination

    • Review settlement demands, medical bills, and case documentation

    • Prepare and review final settlement statements, lien reduction summaries, and disbursement breakdowns

    • Collaborate with attorneys and case managers regarding settlement strategy, case valuation, and lien resolution

    • Track lien statuses, deadlines, follow-ups, and outstanding requests

    • Coordinate with accounting and operations teams regarding settlement distributions and case funding

  • Documentation & Compliance

    • Maintain accurate records of negotiations, communications, and lien resolutions within case management systems

    • Ensure compliance with California lien laws, Medicare reporting requirements, settlement obligations, and firm policies

    • Document negotiation outcomes and maintain organized case files

    • Monitor changes in lien regulations and best practices affecting personal injury settlements

  • Process Improvement & Leadership Support

    • Identify opportunities to improve lien resolution processes, efficiency, and case outcomes

    • Assist with workflow development and operational improvements

    • Provide guidance, training, or mentorship to junior staff when applicable

    • Support team-wide initiatives to improve settlement turnaround times and recovery rates

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in personal injury lien negotiation, settlement handling, or lien resolution

  • Experience working with California personal injury law firms

  • Strong understanding of medical liens, including provider liens, health insurance liens, ERISA liens, Medicare, and Medi-Cal

  • Experience preparing settlement statements, lien reduction summaries, and disbursement calculations

  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and negotiations simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

  • Experience using legal case management platforms such as Filevine, Clio, PracticePanther, or similar systems

  • Experience handling high-volume or high-value personal injury cases (Preferred)

  • Leadership, supervisory, or team management experience (Preferred)

  • Familiarity with medical billing and coding (Preferred)

  • Experience improving operational workflows and case management processes (Preferred)

  • Experience working remotely with U.S.-based law firms (Preferred)
